Custom app or standard software?

Standard software wins for standard processes. A custom application makes sense where the process itself creates an advantage.

A custom application should never be an end in itself. It becomes worthwhile when existing products keep distorting a core workflow or when that workflow is part of the competitive advantage.

01

When standard software is the right choice

Accounting, video calls and conventional project management are mature categories. Buying is almost always more sensible than building.

  • The process is common across the industry
  • Many vendors solve the problem well enough
  • Changes are mostly visual
  • Adapting your own workflow is acceptable
02

When a custom app makes sense

When people switch between several tools every day, maintain the same data repeatedly or make critical decisions outside the system, a process layer is often missing.

  • The workflow is specific and business-critical
  • Integrations matter more than a long feature list
  • One focused interface can replace several detours
  • Data and rules should remain under your control
03

The combination often wins

The best solution does not replace every existing system. A lean custom app can connect CRM, file storage and automation, while providing only the missing user interface.
